I got the best freebie in the mail today. I think it must have been one of the giveaways through Seventeen Magazine. You can enter them online and then a certain number of winners are chosen. You don’t know if you won until you receive the item in the mail. Pretty nifty!
Now I’m not usually one to turn down free stuff, but I have to admit this one is weird. The Tea Party Patriots sent me a DVD and a copy of the Constitution in the mail, unsolicited of course. I’m not entirely sure which candidate they support since usually tea partiers are extreme Republicans but this seemed a little more left leaning. I got all of that from the packaging of course as there’s no way I’m going to sit and watch two hours of political propaganda. I’m pretty much over the election. I’m sick of the phone calls, emails, mailers and debates. I’d like to watch TV again without being bombarded by political ads, most of which are total crap. Seriously, check them out on politifact.com. The site tests the truth about what’s said in the ads and by candidates, without any preference as to political party. Can’t we just vote now and put an end to it all?
Target, I still love you, but Walmart kind of kicked your butt tonight. In case you aren’t in on the secret, mid-July is about the time crazy clearance starts popping up so stores can make space for the last major holidays of the year. This means crazy savings, especially when you pair the clearance with coupons. I got all of this for $7.38 with tax. The two glass Glade scent holders, which are usually $3-4 were on sale for $2 plus I had two $2 off coupons making them free. The Glade refills which are usually $5ish were $2.50 each and I had two $1 off coupons making them $1.50 each. The starter kit which is usually $8-9 was on clearance for $5 plus I had $2.50 off making it $2.50. The spray refill was marked down to $1.50 and I had a $1.50 off coupon making it free. The starter kit was marked down to $2 and I had $1 off making it $1. Amazing! I basically paid a little less than normal for the one diffuser starter kit and got the rest free. I love clearance! It should be a whole new holiday! You may be able to get similar deals at your Walmart either using coupons you’ve already clipped or by printing some from coupon.com or redplum.com.
Through my usual freebie/discount/couponing blog sites I found a thing where you can get free glasses. So during my downtime at work waiting for pages to come in, I tried to pick out my freebie pair of glasses. It’s actually pretty great, since I need a new pair anyway because I fall asleep with mine on and they’re bent. I just have to get my prescription, which I called my eye doctor to have faxed, but it never came. Until I get it, my freebie is on hold.
A new magazine came in the mail yesterday. I get all of these free magazine subscriptions because freebie blogs I follow post links to them all the time. “Everyday Food” came for the first time yesterday and “OK” came today. I’ll probably get more use out of the food magazine because I love trying new recipes whereas I’m not that into tabloids. I used to be super into them a few years back, but that was before I learned that most of what’s printed is total crap. As an actual journalist (as in employed by a real newspaper) I’m appealed that these people get paid to make things up. In my business there is no such thing as an anonymous source and that’s all tabloids use. Anonymous source is basically synonymous with made up quote, except in legal situations and then the source is still given some reference, but not enough to specifically name them. Plus, tabloids employ paparazzi, many of whom will go so far as to stalk a celebrity’s toddler at school to get a shot. That’s sick. So I think I’ll actually read the food magazine whereas I’ll just laugh at the ridiculousness that fills the pages of the tabloid.
My summer Target Beauty Bag came in the mail today! These little cosmetic bags are awesome. They’re filled with tons of free samples and coupons. This is the second one I’ve gotten. A few weeks ago I received the spring beauty bag. They can be hard to score though. You have to sign up via Target Style on Facebook and there are only a certain amount available so you have to act pretty quick. I think all of the summer ones are gone, but there may be a fall one available in a few months.
Lately, I’ve been racking up the free magazines. If you follow freebie or coupon blogs, you can find offers for all sorts of great things. I’ve gotten four full one-year subscriptions to magazines, including Shape and Everyday With Rachel Ray. I know of at least two more that should be coming, including Everyday Food, which I scored free today via Recyclebank.com. It’s a website where you learn about tons of different green things and earn points. The points can then be used to purchase a variety of rewards.
Last week, I finally got my free year subscription to Shape. I filled out some random survey and figured the magazine would never actually come, but sure enough it did. I also received a free year of Maxim. I ordered it for Ron, but I actually like the way they advertise gadgets in it. I wish women’s magazines did the same thing. I’m still waiting on Ebony and Rachel Ray (both of which I got the same way). There’s tons of crazy freebies out there if you just look for them. A good start is joining a blog like Sea of Savings or Freebies 2 Deals, both of which post about deals you may not have found otherwise.
I had to get up super early to take pictures this morning for an article I’m working on, but at least I got some free swag. It was pretty cool and totally unexpected. I love free stuff.
Today, my free Target beauty bag came in the mail. Last month, Target was giving the bags away via its Target Style Facebook page. I was able to sign up for one before the maximum number was handed out. The bag contained a ton of free samples along with some great coupons. I’m so glad I was able to get one. I saw that they were being offered again earlier this week, but they went pretty fast. I’m not sure if they’ll be offered again but you could check the sample spot section of the Target website and the Target Style Facebook page.
